Statement from Helen Grant MP

Helen Grant MP is the local MP for Marden (Maidstone and the Weald). Her statement on this is quoted below – it is vague, but as she cannot generally comment on pre-applications then this is not unexpected.

As you may be aware, the Local Plan Review will pave the way for development in Maidstone through to 2038. At this stage, it is currently in its very early stages and is not due for completion until 2022. This means that there are, at this point, no formal planning applications on the table. I will however be investigating the specific suggestions which have been proposed in relation to the area close to Marden and will be holding meetings in this regard later in the week.

Furthermore, I should make clear that, within my role as your MP, I have no direct jurisdiction over the planning system. I therefore cannot decide if any application is granted or refused  This power resides with our local borough council and their elected councillors as the planning authority. However, as your MP, I am able to represent the opinions of my constituents to ensure that their views are heard. I can assure you that I am absolutely committed to doing so as this Local Plan Review progresses and, with this in mind, I very much look forward to meeting the community groups involved in the coming months to discuss their understandable concerns.

In addition, my long running campaign to persuade our Local Authorities of the need to ensure that any future development is accompanied by the required infrastructure continues apace and will be at the crux of any contribution I make to the Local Plan Review. I will be monitoring this matter very closely in the weeks and months ahead and will, of course, continue to bear your thoughts in mind throughout. I also note your reference to Brexit, if you have specific concerns on this matter which you would like me to address then please do not hesitate to get in touch and I would, of course, be very happy to do so.
